Foto is cool and clean, all that we wanted Instagram to be, but the issue is, in many ways, is just like all the others: it’s privately owned, centralized, closed, probably will be monetized at some point, and, as much as its founders are well intended, its roadmap will be decided by a handful of people. At some point, by the shareholders. Musk is right at one thing: these services are becoming the global, digital public square. And that’s why they need to evolve into something that’s open, decentralized and based on standards. And Foto doesn’t seem to be any of that.
